The main point about AI in education

Not so long ago, neural networks were used cautiously and treated as an experiment. Now AI is penetrating all spheres of life, including the educational process. The ability to let a neural network solve routine tasks makes it an indispensable assistant for students and teachers.

In this article, we will analyze the role artificial intelligence plays in learning, its benefits and give examples of its use.

The role of AI in Russian education

Adopted in 2019 decree of the President aimed at a national strategy for the development of artificial intelligence until 2030. This document is the basis for the development of AI tools, including in the field of education.

Every year the regulatory framework is replenished: terminology is approved, rules for the use of AI, development prospects, methods of personal data protection, application in spheres of activity and other standards are established.

As part of the federal project "Artificial Intelligence", the Russian government is introducing the study of AI at all levels of education.

For example, an Olympiad aimed at finding non-standard solutions for the application of AI algorithms is held for schoolchildren in grades 8-11. As of 2024, more than 18,000 schoolchildren from 89 regions have participated.

For 2022-2024, about 10,000 people enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs in the development of artificial intelligence. And by the end of 2024, more than 22,000 people have already been trained in higher education.

Professional development and regular updating of IT knowledge is provided for teachers. In 2024, about 5,000 teachers upgraded their qualifications and 1,080 received grants for this purpose.

The following GOSTs have been developed to establish general rules and address AI applications:

  • GOST R 59895-2021 - general provisions and terminology;
  • GOST R 59896-2021 - Requirements for teaching and learning materials for adaptive learning with artificial intelligence algorithms;
  • GOST R 59898-2021 - general provisions for quality assessment of AI systems;
  • GOST R 59900-2021 - Requirements for control samples of initial data for testing of AI systems in education;
  • GOST R 59897-2021 - requirements for data collection, storage, processing, transmission and protection.

Despite the development of artificial intelligence in education at the state level, there are a number of challenges in implementing AI in the system.

Not all schools are technically equipped with equipment, stable internet, and specialists. Hence the uneven access to technology.

There is a risk of privacy breaches. AI has access to students' personal information, grades, proficiency levels - without proper protection, this is a concern.

The lack of the same standards for AI solutions leads to different results from different programs.

Introduction of artificial intelligence in education is a big step towards informational, economic and scientific development of the country. A competent approach to education will make AI a tool rather than a new problem.

Key benefits of using AI in education

Let's look at examples of how artificial intelligence helps to organize the learning process, for teachers and students.

Personalizing learning for everyone

The school program is designed for everyone. In case of difficulties, a student can figure it out on his own or turn to a tutor. Artificial intelligence makes it possible to take into account the ability level of each individual: the speed of learning, strengths and weaknesses.

For example, Tomsk University and the IT company ENBISYS have developed a program for an individual approach to learning mathematics called Plario. The system selects a learning path depending on the level of preparation, and in the process evaluates progress and adjusts the path. The program allows you to fill in gaps in the material you have learned and start learning new topics without stress and at your own pace.

In addition, neural networks help students with disabilities. For students with low vision, a neural network converts text into speech. For the hearing impaired, it will decode video, audio or speech into written text. For international students, AI translators that instantly translate text into an easy-to-understand format are suitable.

Automation of routine tasks of teachers

AI can be entrusted with routine and monotonous work. As of 2025, neural networks are capable of checking tests and homework, evaluating material for logic and coherence. Teachers can use neural networks to write teaching documents, prepare material or presentations for a lesson.

Removing the technical burden from teachers will allow more interaction with students: explaining complex topics or working individually.

Help students at any time

AI assistants are teachers who are available 24/7. Plario is one example of how neural networks are helping students learn. In addition, AIs explain complex topics, act as examiners, and take you step-by-step through problem solving.

This speeds up and improves the learning process, as the student does not linger over a difficult topic, but immediately gets help in solving it.

AI technologies and examples of their application in education

According to the interrogation At the Higher School of Economics, 87% of students use neural networks in learning. Generative AI tools create texts, outlines, write term papers, explain topics, and prepare presentations.

One of those tools is ReText.AI.he helps students and faculty:

  • Create an outline for a presentation;
  • to write term papers, essays, notes;
  • Create class topics;
  • paraphrase complex texts into an understandable format;
  • find errors in the text.

Proctoring and control in exams

AI proctoring is a technology used in online exams or quizzes to automatically monitor students. This is necessary to keep students honest when solving assignments.

The AI system analyzes the student's behavior through a webcam and monitors the student's movements and extraneous sounds. When the AI notices suspicious actions or foreign objects, it automatically signals the examiner or records the action as an attempt to cheat.

With the growing popularity of distance learning, proctoring ensures grading objectivity and reduces cheating in online exams.

Gamification and interactive simulations

Gamification - utilizing game elements and mechanics in education to increase student engagement and learning effectiveness.

This allows you to check your knowledge level, explain topics, analyze progress and gaps in your studies.

Interactive simulations model life examples:

  • business processes are for economists;
  • labs are for physicists and chemists;
  • surgeries are for medics;
  • Construction simulator - for builders and engineers;
  • flight simulators are for pilots.

Due to simulators, students test their knowledge in practice and reduce the fear of mistakes. This gives them the opportunity to objectively assess their skills and make mistakes without consequences.

Collectively, generative AI makes learning more flexible and personalized, with a focus on hands-on experience.

The main point about AI in education

In 2019, Presidential Decree No. 490 "On the Development of Artificial Intelligence in the Russian Federation" was issued, which launched the development of AI at the state level. GOSTs and standards are being developed for implementation in educational programs and professional development systems.

AI tools are being taught to students and faculty: as of 2024, more than 10,000 students are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs, and nearly 5,000 faculty members have advanced degrees in artificial intelligence.

The key benefits of artificial intelligence are personalizing learning, streamlining routine work, and helping students with AI assistants.

Generative neural networks, proctoring, gamification and simulations make learning flexible, honest, engaging and practice-oriented.

Despite the difficulties of implementing artificial intelligence in learning, if used correctly, it will become a powerful tool for solving important problems.
